Media Server of the Year
A new TPV product category this year, and one continuously evolving, music servers were rolled out by several companies. Common features include a disc transport/burner for importing music to an internal hard drive, proprietary operating software, wireless and Ethernet connectivity (including some internet access), and multiple operating options: front panel buttons, a supplied remote control, and/or linked computers.
The Olive Musica got the nod over several ambitious competitors. A sleek silver component that looks and performs very much like upscale hi-fi equipment, the Musica has a 160 GB hard drive sufficient to contain the equivalent of a 235 full-length CDs as RAW files, or 1045 CD quality MP3 discs. An automated feature uses metadata embedded in commercial CDs to categorize incoming tunes and to store info about artists, song titles, composers and so on. In a properly configured system, the Musica enables three-way music streaming.
It is possible to access everything stored in the Musica without a computer, but its full utility can't be easily exploited with only the front-panel buttons and supplied remote control. For that you need a linked computer running iTunes, making management of your song library and creation of compilation discs a breeze. With a notebook computer, the Musica is the coolest thing since crushed ice.
